the shiniest whitest asylum ever built and they still let a good guy doll into group therapy

okay the opening rave massacre had me sitting straight up like WHAT is happening, that's how you start a horror movie and everyone knows it. josh stewart as arkin is genuinely doing more than this movie deserves, he's just a sweaty ball of rage and i believed every second of him surviving stuff he has no business surviving. i know the critic consensus is basically "gross and dumb" and yeah, it's 82 minutes of practical traps and mean little tricks and i lowkey loved that it never once slows down to explain anything to me. is the guy in the mask the most iconic villain ever, no. but this is the aliens to the collector's alien and i will die defending it, my friend left the room during one of the trap bits and i felt POWERFUL

the rat poison chili dinner scene had me clocking every bowl like a detective, mancini remembered chucky's scary again

willem dafoe voicing a death god is the only person here who read the assignment, everyone else is doing final destination cosplay

that pendulum opening rips man, like the pit and the pendulum if poe had a really good time at home depot, and then the rest of the movie just kinda... sits there. i actually love the strahm/hoffman cat and mouse stuff, costas mandylor doing his whole silent intense thing while scott patterson sniffs around, but oh my god the flashbacks. half this thing is footage from movies i already watched. i don't think saw V is the death of the franchise the way everyone says, the room-of-five trap is genuinely clever once you clock what they're supposed to do, i was actually leaning in. it just keeps stopping to explain itself to me and i wanted to go shut up i was THERE for four and seven was right there waiting

the drunk jenga scene rewired something in me, i'm suddenly very okay with being single

d'onofrio hanging from the hooks lives rent free in my skull but the actual movie around him kinda evaporates

a serial killer with a blood phobia who scrubs his hands raw is genuinely the funniest and saddest character archetype and dacre montgomery PLAYS it. there's a bit where he types out a reddit comment and thinks twice about the punctuation and i felt that in my soul. the third act lost the thread for me a little, there's a fake ending that completely killed the momentum i was riding and i sat there like ok we're still going huh. but the lipstick knife. the way she shoves him into a puddle at the end. scream for people who've worked content moderation and never recovered
