ok so the hallway thing genuinely made my whole body clench up like i was bracing for a car crash, and then the rest of the movie is two old men whispering about horrible stuff in dark rooms and i cannot lie i kept checking how much was left. brad dourif doing those monologues is the best thing i've seen all month, george c scott looks like he wants to fistfight god the entire runtime, and when they're in a room together it rules... but then the last stretch kicks in and it feels like a completely different, dumber movie barged in and started yelling. i wanted to love this the way everyone on here loves it and instead i just love like four minutes of it very very much. worth it for the nurse alone though, i'll defend that to my grave

a long empty hospital corridor where nothing moves and the light hums and you wait. that is the film. everyone wants to talk about the thing with the shears but the stretch of nothing before it is the whole reason it lands. blatty lets a room sit until it goes wrong. george c scott just listens to brad dourif for what feels like ten unbroken minutes and the wrongness creeps in sideways. a talky sequel that dares you to stay still. more quiet than anything else from that year. i wish it had ended one confessional monologue sooner but i forgive it.
