that pendulum opening rips man, like the pit and the pendulum if poe had a really good time at home depot, and then the rest of the movie just kinda... sits there. i actually love the strahm/hoffman cat and mouse stuff, costas mandylor doing his whole silent intense thing while scott patterson sniffs around, but oh my god the flashbacks. half this thing is footage from movies i already watched. i don't think saw V is the death of the franchise the way everyone says, the room-of-five trap is genuinely clever once you clock what they're supposed to do, i was actually leaning in. it just keeps stopping to explain itself to me and i wanted to go shut up i was THERE for four and seven was right there waiting

five strangers in a cyanide room and they keep splitting the resources instead of pooling them. work together, it is literally the lesson, and they fail it cold. that's the entry where the lessons get explained more than they get felt. strahm sealing hoffman in the glass coffin and dying in it anyway is a clean reversal, i'll grant that, and seth crushing his own hands for nothing in the opener is the nastiest beat. weakest trap design of the run, though. fewer real choices, more flashback bookkeeping. you can study the survival logic. the film around it is running on fumes.
