the first half had me genuinely locked in, that lava prison creeping along like a thriller, then the winged thing showed up and everyone forgot what movie they were making

bones getting her big toenail ripped off with tweezers and just *laughing* because she does that to herself after practice anyway is genuinely the best thing in here and i was howling. then ten minutes later someone gets a fork in the eye played dead serious and i'm like ok so which movie are we. the blade pointe shoes in unison made me physically yell at my tv though, rewound it twice. shame uma thurman shows up does the silliest little accent and then never gets to actually fight anyone... you don't book the bride to make her stand in a doorway. fun when it's dumb, lost whenever it tries to be a real story

two women maced into oblivion swinging at each other while total eclipse of the heart plays… i was howling. packed house at my screening absolutely lost it. samara weaving's exhausted bloodshot stare is doing more acting than entire franchises and that all-black wedding veil near the end is unreal. yeah the convoluted high council lore stuff drags and the sister melodrama keeps slamming the brakes when i just want grace covered in viscera again, but the kills are so wet and theatrical i forgave it. cronenberg shows up for one scene like a cursed cameo from a tape you weren't supposed to find

a metal thorn pushing up through his cheek while he shaves. that's where it got me. this is not a movie, it's 67 minutes of pure assault. the 16mm grain hisses and clanks like the film stock itself is rusting. chu ishikawa's score isn't music it's the sound of a factory dying, all clashing tools and machine clatter, and it never lets anything breathe, which is the point. the stop-motion where the metal grows out of him moves wrong in a way 4k could never fake. the subway chase, the woman with the tentacle, around the halfway mark, i had to sit very still after. analog body horror at its most pulverizing. i could hear this movie in my teeth.

that pause before the airport doors open is the only part that scared me. then it goes loud and stays loud. everything here is too clean. nothing rough, nothing tactile, just polished plastic faces that never quite land an expression. the curtis mutation should feel wrong all over and instead it just gleams. i kept waiting for a single held silent shot and it never came. leon reloading in the dark is the closest it gets to a real moment. competent. shiny. forgettable the second the screen cuts out.

my favorite stretch is the static in osaka going dark. they cut every light in the city to hide and the screen just holds, a grey held breath before the suits clash. black and white does godzilla a favor, the grain eats the seams the way a clean transfer never would. then the fight speeds up and turns into two guys wrestling at the wrong tape speed and i laughed, sorry. somebody undercranked the dread right out of it. this one's a quiet film bolted onto a loud one and it never picks. but anguirus tumbling into the bay, the water and the roar layered wrong, scared me more than it should have. rushed, yes. but the slow parts still get to you.

they dragged a leather glove down a double bass and made the loneliest sound in cinema. it isn't a growl it's a moan, a low thing that crawls up from under the floor. the analog grain does half the work. you can almost smell the smoke off the print. the schoolgirls singing the prayer over the wreckage, that quiet choir laid over a flattened city. i had to pause it. ifukube's march pounds like a heartbeat but it's the silence after the firebreath that sticks. a monster born from a hydrogen test, skin like keloid scars. under all the spectacle it's just grief, very softly, on tape.

• Vincent CraneAn elegy with teeth, gorgeous call. That grey grain mourns in a way no lurid color ever could, every ashen footfall a dirge. The beast lumbers with a sorrow Mr. Boris Karloff would have known in his bones. We meet at eight.

the mirror cracks before meier even gets to the window. a hairline split in the glass and your whole spine knows. that's the whole movie for me right there. i grew up scared of ghosts in static, so a vampire who carries a coffin through rain like a slow tape rewind hits a certain frequency in me. this isn't loud horror. it's charlotte breathing against a hand that wants to bite her. the demon fights are gorgeous but the still moments are what i keep replaying. her pulling the arrow out of his burning chest in the daylight. nobody says much. they don't need to. the coffin scene, i held my breath. the image stayed perfectly clean and somehow that's the scariest part. watch it subbed. let the grain do its thing.
