a soldier's shadow rises and walks off without him, and i have not stopped thinking about it. Dreyer knew what so many forget, that dread lives in the corner of the eye, never in the open hand. the burial seen from inside the coffin, that little window passing the church and the trees, is as fine as anything the form has produced. and the doctor drowned in white flour, swallowed by light itself. a cold thing falling across the soul, felt and never quite seen. this is the gothic as a fever.
