that wedding feast undoes me every time: the loving cup passed hand to hand, the chant of one of us rising until Baclanova recoils. shame upon her. Browning works the climax in the rain, lamps swinging, blades catching the wet dark as the company crawls toward its vengeance. crueler than anything the old masters dared put on a screen. they made poor Cleopatra into a squawking thing in the final reveal and i shivered, plainly. a feature of its age, not a flaw. they did not look away. neither shall i.

a limbless man lights his own cigarette with his mouth, no cut, no trick, browning just lets the lens sit there. that's the whole soul of it. nothing is a costume or an effect here, these are real people, and they get coverage like anyone else. then it turns, and that crawl through the mud and rain, all of them coming for cleopatra, is one of the most genuinely strange things ever shot. you don't watch it so much as get caught in it. "one of us" still rattles me. they let her in. she spat on it. rip to cleopatra honestly, she had it coming.
