delroy lindo hums before he says a word, and that hum is the whole movie's thesis. coogler keeps you in the delta heat for an hour before a single fang shows up, and i loved the waiting. the juke joint oner where sammie pulls the ancestors and the futures into one room earns its own length. not haunted yet, just memory and music, and that's the part that lingers. the back half goes loud and the dread thins when the bodies start dropping. but the front half buys it. one hum i'm still hearing.
