setting a kill to (don't fear) the reaper is west announcing he knows the rules cold, and then he actually keeps them. maxine lives because she never cracks. "i will not accept a life i do not deserve" is her whole survival ethic, and the movie measures everyone else against her. mia goth playing both the girl and the thing hunting her says it all in one casting choice. survival here isn't luck, it's discipline. the slow burn does the real work and the alligator is just a punchline. roots horror, totally unbothered.
