the creature learns to read by firelight and you already know the lesson coming for him: he was made by something that didn't love him and won't answer for it. existence, schopenhauer wrote, is a debt we never asked to incur. victor incurs it on someone else's behalf and walks away. elordi plays the thing not as a monster but as a question nobody wants to hear, and del toro lets the cold landscapes carry what the dialogue can't. a father is just the first uncaring god you meet. the gloss occasionally softens a wound that should stay open and the runtime asks more patience than the dread can fill. but the ending denies forgiveness, and i respect a film that knows there's none to give.
