the demon never once steps into the light, and that single restraint nearly won me over on its own. you understand my position: a camcorder propped on a tripod is not what i would call craft. Sloat is a boor who deserved his fate and spends the whole picture poking the dark with a smirk. dread should come from a creeping silhouette, not a bedsheet and a held breath. and yet that final lunge out of the black hallway, the long wait before it, the door left ajar all night. crude light, no orchestra, no makeup worth the name. i wanted to scorn the whole enterprise. it would not let me.

powder on the hallway floor, footprints leading up into the attic. that's the entire craft, right there. this is the movie everybody points at to dunk on found footage and i will die defending it. one fixed bedroom camera. a clock ticking the night forward. no coverage, no cuts to hide in, the demon does most of its work just offscreen and the frame waits with you. battery logic mostly checks out btw, micah's the type to leave it charging. that last night, the sheets pulling off her by themselves, stuck in me for years. katie standing over the bed for hours, and i mean that as the highest praise.
