kakihara pulls the safety pins out of his own cheeks and the whole room goes silent, that held breath right before a tape eats itself. asano makes a sound with his unhinged jaw that i still hear in my fridge at night. this isn't my haunted-apartment kind of scary. miike just turns the gain all the way up until the gore screams and laughs at once. the tongue-cutting at the dinner table, then his phone ringing into the silence. i wasn't scared the way a ghost scares me. i was scared the way standing too close to a blown speaker scares you. funnier than it should be, which is the point. not my register at all, but it does not let go.
