christou hunched over heaving black tar on live tv, real volume, you can hear it hit the floor. then the kid's head splits open and glows like a forge, clean practical work where the seam in her skull actually reads as flesh giving way. big knock: a couple frames of that digital interstitial garbage pull you right out. fake. didn't need it. dastmalchian carries the talky stretches better than i expected, and i don't usually sit still for this much chatter before the squibs come out. but when they pay it off, they pay it off proper.

the cut to grainy backstage black and white during commercial breaks is the whole con, and it works. they understood that the lie of live broadcast is what doesn't make air, and they built the dread in the gaps. fifteen years running news cameras and the thing that nagged me was the tape logic, master control would never cut away that slow. but i bought it anyway, because dastmalchian sells a man who can't stop performing as the studio comes apart. the worms coming off gus during the hypnosis bit, that one i can't unsee. the ending drops the format and that cost it a skull, but the rest is built right.
