2022 · 103 min · Horror · Thriller
Never talk to strangers.
Finney Blake, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

a final boy who survives by collecting fieldwork from the dead. finney wins because he listens to the body count before him, each victim handing over the one tactic that got them killed. the survivor learns from the failed instead of intuiting alone, and it works. hawke's grabber stays deliberately under-explained and i don't mind, the mask does the work. survival: A, the kid weaponizes prior data like a proper scholar. gwen's clairvoyance is the only thread that frays. 1978 denver shot like a memory you'd rather not keep.

thank you black phone for the dead kids being HELPFUL ghosts, i needed someone on finney's side because i was useless. the phone ringing the first time got a noise out of me my roommate has never heard. ethan hawke never showing his whole face under that mask is so unfair. gwen swearing at jesus in her dream made me laugh and then immediately re-scared me. i kept telling myself i'd never get in the van. but that basement door. nope. six pauses, every light on plus the hallway, pillow on standby. made it, barely.
