johnny depp spends two hours flipping through old books and somehow that's the most relaxed i've ever felt watching a movie about summoning satan. the woodcut engravings with the little differences hidden in them is exactly the slow occult homework i live for, spot the difference but the prize is the devil. then the castle robe orgy reunion happens and everyone's so embarrassed to be there, langella douses himself in gas like a man who really thought it through. it loses the thread completely in the last 20 but i was already gone. khondji shooting every crumbling european library in that brown smoke, i could smell the dust. rosemary's baby this is not, but i didn't need it to be.
