midsummer light that never dims, hay raked into long gold rows, everything soaked in white linen and meadow flowers. and then the cliff. the ättestupa is just a life come due, and the village does not flinch from the deal. people call the commune monstrous. i call them honest. dani arrives a stranger and the place takes her in, gives her sisters who weep when she weeps. that's more care than the boyfriend ever managed. horror in full sun is the hardest kind to make, and aster makes it look like a homecoming.

those women wailing in unison while dani sobs is the most committed group number i've ever watched, and i have performed in a LOT of group numbers. florence pugh, a flower crown, and a breakup treated as the literal apocalypse. that final smile as the temple goes up earns every petal. a whole festival thrown just to ruin one man's relationship is exactly the kind of nerve i aspire to. i clapped.
