those jackal masks are doing ALL the heavy lifting and they know it. anubis showed up to a home invasion and stayed for the whole runtime. the cult commits to standing in the treeline howling instead of, you know, coming inside, which is a choice. but stephen dorff in stubble and pure rage is genuinely good and the scissors-in-bed opening is nasty. i wanted more menace and less of everyone explaining their feelings in a cabin. it swings, it misses, i still had a time. not the cult classic it dressed up to be, but it sure WORE the costume.
