"here's what you're about to see," the opening crawl basically says, because the test audience couldn't follow it. that's not ancient mystery. that's a man reading you the instructions. i WANT to love a story about a buried race and what it left behind in the dirt. the abkani could've been folklore done right, something old crawling back to collect. instead the ancients turn into CGI panthers sprinting down a museum hallway. no field, no season, no place that knows your name. just christian slater jogging through a warehouse at night. dread won't grow on concrete. the land has to mean something first, and this film never steps outside long enough to find any. it promised a haunting. what surfaced was a lighting bill.
