grey bog water to the thigh and nobody saying the thing they all know. that first hour is the good kind of quiet, the trees pressing in, luke seeing the liquor store every time he closes his eyes. exactly what i keep for winter. then the third act opens a door and explains the house, the family, the bargain, and the dread leaks out the way it always does once you can name the thing. moder unseen was a god. moder lit and framed is a very good prop. still, the creature can't leave the forest and neither could i for a while after.

a headless effigy kneeling in the cabin loft, soil and antler and old wood. someone tends that place. the village always has. these friends wander off the marked path in deep summer and act shocked the woods notice. but the old gods ask for so little. a knee, a prayer, and you live forever. where's the tragedy? moder is the best beast design in years, half moose half birch half something older than the first farmer, and she can't leave the trees, which is the whole quiet point. luke screams back at the end. i wanted him to kneel. the cult had food and warmth and everything pledged to him. he chose the rain.
