he takes the mask off in the first act and just stands there being a guy. no mythology, no haunted-childhood backstory. terrifying. maddie doesn't survive by accident, she survives by method: reads sightlines, rations the dead phone, turns the disability the killer mocks into a closed loop he can't manipulate with sound. that's final-girl-as-tactician, and i've waited a long time for the genre to catch up. the one-sentence premise is the whole syllabus, and siegel and flanagan ratchet it minute by minute without breaking their own logic, rarer than people admit. survival: A, she earns it. only mark off is the crossbow taking forever to matter. cleanest siege movie i've graded in a while.
