nighy sits there reading the diary and the film just *shows* you each suspect committing the murders one by one. that's the engine and it absolutely rules. folks slept on this because it stands alone, and i won't accept that. picture a sequel, a whole victorian penny-dreadful murder universe where dan leno keeps turning up. olivia cooke is giving six performances at once and it goes undiscussed. yeah you can spot the twist from the cheap seats, but a second watch knowing the answer is where it gets genuinely interesting. would've made a great part 1 for a series that never came.
