a metal door sliding shut behind the first kill. no music, no warning, just the clang and then nothing. people remember this as a gore film and it barely spills a drop. the horror is in the heat and the bone furniture and the feeling that the camera has stood in that yard too long. the dinner sequence is almost unwatchable and almost nothing happens. they just keep her at the table. grandpa can't hold the hammer. patience as cruelty. it earns every minute of its squalor, the kind you can almost smell through the print. fifty years on it still feels like something that shouldn't have been allowed to exist. i thought about it for days. i did not want to.
