the sarcophagus opens and it's a teenage girl, not bandages and a love story. that's the bravest swing this franchise has taken since brendan fraser left. everyone wants the 1999 adventure-comedy back. cronin said no, this is a possession nightmare about a family, and it actually gets deeper for it, an ancient demon instead of imhotep romance. a real pivot. yeah it drags in the middle. but a mummy movie that finally commits to being scary belongs in the canon, and i'm ranking it above every reboot attempt before it.

a toenail comes off in one slow pull and i felt it in my own foot. real prosthetic, real goo, somebody in a shop earned that. cronin built the whole thing in camera and you can tell, the makeup on the kid coming back from the sarcophagus is layered and wet and lit so you never catch the seam, teeth coming out, the vomit, all of it selling because it's actually there on set. runs long, sure. but every kill is built. give me a garage full of latex over a render farm any day. i clapped.
