a severed hand on the summerhouse floor, lit so the cleaver catches the only light in the frame. Davis quivers on the staircase like a candle in a draught, and Agnes Moorehead skulks through every doorway as Velma, stealing scenes with her whole face. Biroc keeps everything in deep shadow while the harpsichord drifts down those rotting halls, and de Havilland makes poison look like courtesy. the falling flowerpot, the head down the stairs in her fevered dream. one staircase, well shadowed, frightens more than any flood of blood. grand guignol with a magnolia accent, and i adored every cobwebbed minute.
