a buzzer did more to me than any of the screaming. blanche upstairs jamming that intercom button over and over and nobody coming, that little electrical noise wrecked me. not my format, not my era, but bette davis carrying a tray up that staircase is a witness statement i believe completely. the lunch tray reveal works because the lens holds, you watch blanche watch it, no cut to spare you. that's patience. the beach confession landed flat for me though. been holding a thing that long, you'd expect the moment to feel heavier, and it didn't quite. still, the screaming sister and the locked house, i won't shake those for a while.

that face. caked white powder, the smeared cupid's-bow, spit curls on a woman of sixty. Davis does not play Baby Jane so much as exhume her. every shadow in that rotting mansion is doing work the dialogue never has to, and the staircase swallows light like a throat. she serves the parakeet on a silver tray and you laugh, then you are ashamed of laughing. and then the beach: the camera pulls back, the gothic breaks into open sun, and she dances for no one. the loneliest frame in the picture. Aldrich made all of this out of two ruined faces and a flight of stairs.
