The Hills Have Eyes
2006 · 107 min · Horror · Thriller
The lucky ones die first.
Based on Wes Craven's 1977 suspenseful cult classic, The Hills Have Eyes is the story of a family road trip that goes terrifyingly awry when the travelers become stranded in a government atomic zone. Miles from nowhere, the Carter family soon realizes the seemingly uninhabited wasteland is actually the breeding ground of a blood-thirsty mutant family...and they are the prey.

doug walks into that mine carrying a baby and a phone and walks out swinging an american flag like a war club, soaked in mutant blood. the meek son-in-law becomes the avenger, and aja knows it. this isn't a final girl, it's a final family, so survival gets distributed instead of concentrated. nobody earns it through any rules. they earn it through the trailer attack, ten unbroken minutes of the worst thing. nicotero and berger did the faces in latex, not a pixel of cgi, and you can feel it; the kills land because the bodies are real. it leans too hard on shock and the carters stay thin. but doug going down into the dark is a survival arc i'll defend.
