Cronenberg builds the whole picture around one job — that head pop — and brother, it's a masterclass in latex, wax, and a shotgun's worth of honest blood. The final showdown's a mess of bulging veins and burst skin, all practical, all earned. Drags between the goods, but when it delivers, it delivers like a craftsman.
