You must admit, you brought this on yourself.
When Ann, husband George, and son Georgie arrive at their holiday home they are visited by a pair of polite and seemingly pleasant young men. Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.

white golf gloves. he never takes them off and you never stop noticing. most of the violence happens off-frame, in the next room, while the camera waits with you in the kitchen. that's the cruelty. haneke makes you sit in the long minutes after, the dripping tv, the wet sock, the quiet that refuses to resolve into a score. i kept waiting for the genre to rescue me and it wouldn't. then the remote. he rewinds the one moment of relief like a wound un-healing. you feel watched for having wanted it. not a film i love. a film that knows exactly what it's doing and never blinks. the egg at the end is the ugliest thing in it.
