a grave dug on a north-facing ridge where nothing should be buried, and the geomancer knows it the second his boot hits the dirt. folk horror that respects what the land remembers. the family disturbed what was meant to stay buried and the reckoning comes due, the way it always does. i loved that the old man reads the earth like scripture and the shaman reads the dead like weather. the iron stake under the coffin. the thing hidden underneath the thing already hidden. it gets loud and toothy in the back half and i didn't mind one bit. the old ways win here. they should.

now THAT is how you open a movie. the kut ritual, live pigs, kim go-eun shaking herself into a trance, nothing but blade and mud and meat. when they finally crack that coffin the rot is all there with real weight behind it. the giant in the back half is a man in practical armor and you feel the heft of him swinging. the geomancy lore lost me for a stretch, too many whispered rules and not enough digging. but choi min-sik staring into a grave he already knows is cursed carries it. fire scene rules. they let the practical do the labor and it pays off.
