the party bus. blue light, hipster beats, leatherface strolls in the front and goes to work. arms come off, a hand folds back the wrong way, somebody's face meets the chain and it reads wet and heavy the way only real work does. that's a proper squib budget on screen and you feel the weight in every swing. rest of the film is thin and never once scary, i'll hand the critics that. but the kills are built, not painted. that bus sequence belongs in a highlight reel. half a movie of nothing wrapped around five minutes i'd sign my name to.

sally hardesty drives back into harlow with a shotgun, which is the entire reason this entry exists, and they fumble her out in four minutes. that's how a movie ends up with a 30 on the tomatometer. here's the thing though, this is the classic part-3 problem. everyone wanted 1974 slow dread and got a lean direct-sequel slasher that only wants to reach the bus. and the bus is incredible. every long franchise has one mean little entry that gets dunked on for being exactly what it set out to be, then reappraised in ten years. this is harlow's. leatherface tearing a town square apart is the story moving, not stalling.
