she goes after the thing inside her with a metal hairpin and they do not cut away. that's somebody who respects you enough to hold the shot. the nose break on the sink is real craftsmanship too, you can hear the cartilage, every drop earned. one gripe: the second half slows way down once the firefighter shows up and it gets soft on me. but that oil pouring out of her, the belly splitting open at the end, somebody in that shop knew exactly what they were doing. respect.

motor oil leaking out of her in the shower is the image i can't shake. ducournau just goes for it. my actual problem: this is a standalone and you can feel the seams. the whole back half with vincent and the missing kid is doing SO much that it never lands a clean ending. give me three of these and i'd know where it's pointed. one film can't carry that much world. still, agathe rousselle breaking her own nose on the sink got the whole couch to flinch in unison. a palme d'or for a car-pregnancy movie is the bravest swing in years. in a decade people circle back.
