the carriage rolls into the surf to gather a drowned man and for a moment i forgot i was watching a film at all. Sjostrom built his ghosts out of light itself, double-exposed so the dead pass behind a chair and then before it, three dimensions of fog. and the axe at the door, the very gesture Kubrick would lift six decades later for the shining. 1921, and already the form had a soul. they keep telling me the early men were primitive. then explain how someone with a hand-cranked camera and a borrowed legend made a thing i cannot stop seeing.
