Victor Sjöström conjures a spectral coach from the very grain of the celluloid, and his double-exposures still leave me dumbstruck. Watch the light bleed clean through the phantom driver, as though the dead were made of fog and lantern-glow, pure shadowplay of the old masters. A morality tale told with the gravity of a sermon and the cunning of a magician. 8 skulls.
