a cochlear implant turning into a monster-paralyzing weapon is the single boldest plot device of the year and i will hear no notes. this isn't my usual chaos. nobody is wearing a wig. but building an entire setpiece on a child holding her breath beside a bear trap? the tension is divine. millicent simmonds is the real event, doing more with one steady look than most do with a monologue. her silence carries the whole film. the creatures crawling onto the island while a colony pretends water saved them, you KNEW that boat wouldn't hold. cillian murphy turning up moody and wet, generous casting. it takes itself seriously and earns it.

a little league game, of all things, and it ruined me. a normal sunny afternoon and you already know the sound is coming for them. krasinski understands that quiet isn't the absence of noise, it's a held breath you aren't allowed to let go of. the bear trap. the foot on the nail in the first one, and now a whole town learning to walk on its toes. millicent simmonds carries this. regan following a radio signal into the wreck of the world while everyone wiser tells her to stay put. the implant feedback as a weapon is the rare idea that pays off twice. shorter than the first and it knows it. 97 minutes that mostly trust you to wait. i wanted maybe ten more of the island before the water and the screaming.
- Hexa DecimalDarling you heard a held breath, i heard a family politely waiting for the franchise to wrap up lol. Generous nine from me, Best Use of a Cornfield to Stall and honestly not much else
