the woods get the boy before the mother ever does. that's the part nobody wants to sit with. good damp irish dark in this one. you can feel the ground pull. the sinkhole isn't a monster, it's a mouth, and the land has been eating long before sarah parked her car on it. the cracked old woman in the road kept telling her the truth and got called mad for it. the village is usually right. the spider-crawl across the kitchen floor stayed with me more than i'd like. the boy who isn't the boy, eating like he learned how yesterday. yes, it's a changeling story you've heard. so is every harvest. the old ways don't need to be new to be owed. the soil takes what it's owed and hands back something that looks close enough. she burns it down at the end. i don't blame her. but you can't burn what's underground.
