that soul-swapping condor mythology everybody calls the dumbest thing in the movie is the only thing keeping it alive. the opening reveal where the mild-mannered dad turns out to be the riverton ripper, raul esparza screaming in the wrecked ambulance, that's a genuinely great twenty minutes nobody discusses. yeah the script after that is a mess, bug talking to the bird, the emo prom-king bullies, max thieriot doing six accents because he's playing all seven kids at once. but craven was reaching for actual mythology, not just kills. it's his most overlooked entry, and the only thing i hold against it is that it stands alone. a sequel would've been worth dying for.
