they build the whole heathen stand in front of you, every crank, then go to work on a skull. that's confidence. three fingers gone in the grinder and you feel each one. the head-drill rig has real weight and torque, none of that weightless digital spatter, blood dark and thick the way it actually pools. dan stevens gets a hook-in-the-mouth scene that earns its screen time. folk-horror usually means a lot of standing in fields waiting for nothing. this one makes you wait too long too, but it pays the bill in the back half. evans did his homework on medieval punishment and it shows in every joint.

the head drill. the little crank. a bog goddess slurping blood from a funnel like the world's most committed brunch guest. dan stevens spends the whole island vibrating at a frequency only dogs can hear and i respect it. michael sheen plays a cult prophet who KNOWS the bit is over and keeps going anyway, the most relatable thing here. it takes its sweet time, my attention wandered around the 90 minute mark like a goat off its leash. but when it finally tips into full pagan delirium it goes all the way and never blinks. the root-wrapped grinder man steals the whole island.
