autumn in mill valley, the corn gone brittle, a scarecrow named harold left too long in his field. of course he came down off the post. you don't keep a thing like that out there and not pay it. sarah bellows wrote the curse into that book, and the town wrote her into the wall. the old debt always comes back wearing straw and stitched-together limbs. harold rising in the daylight field is the truest moment here, the bill collecting itself. the rest gets distracted, runs off to the city, loses the loam under it. but that scarecrow knew the old ways.

a book writing itself in red ink, the page filling while she just watches. that image trusts the dark the way the rest of the film won't. it keeps reaching for restraint and then flinching. the pale lady down that hospital corridor is the one stretch where it slows down enough to settle, the hallway folding into red, the slow lean toward harold. for a few minutes it's the film it could have been. then it remembers it's an anthology and starts checking its watch. del toro's creatures earn the quiet. the framing story doesn't trust them to. still, the pale lady will outlast the plot in my memory, and that counts for something.
