a rented house in rural wales, doors sealed, the year turning grey outside the windows. inside, the old ways done properly for once. no shortcuts, no incense-shop nonsense, just the book of abramelin and the cruelty it demands. solomon is right to be strict. the rite does not care about your grief, only your honesty, and the house knows when she lies. i sided with him through every awful instruction, even the worst ones. the price had to be paid. and she pays. when the thing finally comes up the cellar stairs she asks not for revenge but for the strength to forgive, which is the harder reaping. you get back what you put in.

a chalk line on the floor. that's the whole spell, really. don't cross it for months. a film that understands a circle is only as frightening as your willingness to stay inside it. oram makes you wait and wait, two people sealed in one house until the air goes wrong. so much quiet before anything supernatural deigns to show up that i almost resented it for arriving. the last stairwell is what people argue about. they wanted vengeance. she asks for something gentler. unhurried the whole way down, then a turn i didn't think this kind of film had the nerve to make.
