i came in expecting a kids fight cartoon and got gothic dread by accident. those hand-painted castle backgrounds. a whole room of monster statues just standing there with menace and nobody comments on it. the still moments in lucifer's castle are creepier than the actual fights, which float around like they forgot gravity. painted grain holds a chill no rendered castle ever could. the princess on the altar, the blood, the candlelight. that one image is doing more horror work than the movie even knows. i would not enter the spooky castle, but rip to these children. a fantasy that keeps tripping into nightmare.
