a kid writes a name and physics pulls a final-destination on the victim. that ferris wheel is the entire pitch. so here's my problem: you hand a boy a weapon with a literal rulebook and he fumbles it like he's never seen a horror movie. mia read the rules. mia is the only person in seattle who clocked she was in a slasher and behaved accordingly. light is the boyfriend who dies by reel two convinced he's the lead. she's survivor and killer at once, the one genuinely interesting accident. dafoe's ryuk is a great half-glimpsed stalker, the kills are nasty, and everything else got blended. mia gets an A. the film scrapes a C for showing me a girl who chose to win.
