Strip away the purists' outrage and what Wingard delivers is a slick American horror-thriller about a god-complex teen and the demon whispering rules in his ear. Willem Dafoe's Ryuk is the death-god as Greek chorus, and Light's survival depends entirely on out-writing a detective who never sleeps. The deaths are baroque, Rube Goldberg executions — footnote them generously.
