a sound from the attic before you ever see anything up there. that's the whole curse right there, a noise where a noise shouldn't be. shot on video and you can feel it, the grain does half the haunting for free. toshio's throat-click and kayako's wet rattle live in the gaps, not the jumps. the plot scatters into six pieces and i didn't need it to add up, i needed it to keep making that noise. around the cupboard scene i turned my own volume down like that would help. analog dread does something a clean image can't, it feels sick at the source.
