jarman's white-tiled walls do more work than the screaming nuns. not slow exactly, but the architecture is patient in a way the hysteria refuses to be. russell films a city as a sterile box and then lets it corrode from the inside. oliver reed walks to the stake already half-erased and that quiet is the only still moment in the whole baroque mess. the orgy gets the headlines. the long shave before the burning is what actually stays. you can feel the power machinery grinding under all the spectacle, and it never once raises its voice.
