that porcelain mask. Scob acts an entire tragedy through two living eyes and a frozen face, and i have not stopped thinking about it. Franju shoots the surgery like a clinic report, the tracing, the clamps, the lifting away of a face, and the cold of it is worse than any shrieking. grey Parisian gloom, the kennels, the white doves at the close settling on her shoulders while the hounds finish the good doctor. cruel and lovely at once. a mask can hold more sorrow than a scream, and Scob proves it. one of the rare ones i carry out into the daylight with me.
