the oven. Dunagan beckoning that child toward the oven, sweet as pie, is the finest piece of menace i have seen in years. i braced myself the moment i learned it was all shot on the kids' little cameras, and the shaky digital business is not my idea of craft. but when the old woman scratches naked at the bedroom door, lens trembling, the chill arrived right on cue. her grandmother is a true creature, all warmth curdled into something wrong. the boy and his rapping i could do without. give me the farmhouse at night and that terrible patient smile.
