tom noonan delivers a whole monologue about needing a sitter for his 'mother' with the calm of a man who knows you'll say yes anyway, and he owns every doorway he stands in. the pizza dance to The Fixx is the highlight of the whole thing, jocelin donahue alone in that house giving it everything. and then we WAIT. and wait. restraint, i suppose, but i need to be at brunch. greta gerwig gets shot at a graveyard and exits stage left far too soon. the last twenty minutes finally remember they're in a horror film and i perked right up. very serious, very pretty, just not quite my séance.

a full eclipse hangs over the whole thing like a bad harvest moon and i felt it in my teeth. ti west knows the dread lives in the waiting, the empty house, the long drive out to where the trees grow older and quieter. mr ulman doesn't really lie to her. he tells her almost everything and lets her walk in anyway. that's the old ways working exactly as designed. samantha dances to her walkman like a girl who doesn't know the moon's already spoken for. when it finally turns it turns fast and red. patient soil, patient reaping. they got what they were owed, and so did the night.
