the moment Kong turns the great log and shakes the sailors into the ravine, i forgot for an hour that any of it was wrought by hand. O'Brien did not animate a beast, he conferred a soul on armature and rabbit fur, and the work across that fog-bound island outclasses most of what passes for spectacle today. Wray screams into the void and we believe the void. atop the Empire State the brute earns his own small immortality. the aeroplanes were the real monsters all along, and the men who made this knew it.
