Ah, the great ape himself — a creature of bristling pathos that, while no equal to dear Mr. Boris Karloff's tender monstrousness, still moves me to ache for the beast. Mr. Willis O'Brien's craft animates a kingdom of fog and torchlight, every frame a study in how shadow can lend mass to a dream. Miss Fay Wray screams as though the gothic itself were tearing free of her throat. A grand piece of old-world shadowplay.
