the button-eyed mask decker wears is scarier than any slasher villain that decade, and somehow this got buried. here's my thing. the studio took a clive barker movie where the MONSTERS are the heroes and tried to sell it as a friday the 13th knockoff. of course it flopped, that's a marketing crime, not the film's fault. midian as a whole underground civilization of outcasts is the kind of world-building most franchises spend three films reaching for, and this nails it in one. cronenberg as the doctor is just nasty, quiet and patient and evil. watch the cabal cut, the theatrical version is a different, worse movie someone stapled together in a panic. wrongly convicted for thirty years, and the restored cut is the retrial.
