okay so the bell. the BELL. i clicked my heels together every time it went off and i still cannot tell you why a little ding turned my whole nervous system into wet paper. that fake kids tv show bit lives in my skull now rent free. but here's my thing, everyone's out here calling this the second coming and it's just... a really solid haunted hotel movie? adam scott is doing real work and the inn looks like it hasn't been touched since 1974 in the best way, but it kept slowing down right when i wanted it to grab me by the throat. i wanted to be destroyed and instead i was just very pleasantly spooked. still good. still going to think about that suite for a week

adam scott being a genuinely miserable prick in this and i could not look away, the man committed to being the worst guy in the room and it rules. there's a bell in here that damian mccarthy has somehow turned into the scariest sound i've heard all year, every time it hit i felt it in my teeth. the dumbwaiter bit had me physically sinking into my seat like i could make myself smaller too. do i think it juggles maybe one too many haunted threads by the end? yeah a little, the witch and the missing woman never quite hold hands the way i wanted. but i was scared in a bright afternoon screening which almost never happens to me so whatever he's doing is working

the innkeeper trapped her behind a locked door and called it safe. first mistake. you do not lock something into the ground and expect it to stay polite. mccarthy understands the old ways. a witch in the honeymoon suite is not a monster, she's a debt. the man carried his guilt up the road in an urn and thought the redwood would take it. it wanted more than ashes. that white canopy bed with the sheer curtains is the truest image i've seen all year. you can see straight through the thing that's supposed to protect you. the rabbit on the telly knew it too. goes soft in the back half, too much explaining for a story already whole. but i won't pretend i wasn't frightened. the bill gets paid. it always does.
